Circus RC News, exclusive interview with David Ronnefalk septembre 11, 2014 by Chris Leave a Comment « David Ronnefalk did it again! » With this second European title Ronnefalk David continues to build one of the most impressive list of awards. This exceptional driver kindly agreed to answer my questions. Thank you to David and Adrien Bertin for this interview. Circus RC: Hi David, tell us a about yourself. David: I´m David Ronnefalk, 18 years old from sweden. Circus RC: How did you get started in the world of rc? David: When i was younger my dad was flying rc planes. i always followed him to the fields to watch and was eager to try, but i was too young to keep a plane in the air without crashing. that´s when dad showed me cars instead, it was at a local mini-z track and i was hooked immediately! Circus RC: What are your sponsors? David: My sponsors are: Kyosho, Team Orion, AKA, Ko Propo, Runnertime, Maugrafix, Takashima design, lmr, MIP, Ghea, dcd, dialedinc.com, tonisport, neobuggy.net, redrc.net, liverc.com. Circus RC: There are some weeks you won your second title of european champion. congratulations! could you give us a summary of your week? david: Yes thanks! it was a great week from start to finish basically. I won the warm-up race there earlier this year so i knew i would have the speed and everything needed to defend my title, even if it is always a lot tougher at a euros than a warm-up race. Practice started out good i felt very confident with my package directly and i was able to be top seeded after practice were over. Going in to qualifying i just wanted to make clean runs without mistakes as it was a quite small track. I was able to tq 4 out of 5 rounds and took the overall tq by that. Some told me that i would be unstoppable, but i knew some guys showed great pace and it was gonna be a different race on finals day. I had a good semi and started from pole in the 1 hour main. The first part of the final was a bit rough, basically just bad driving from my side as i wanted to open up a gap. However after 15min mark i was able to start pull away from the others that were battling hard with each other. After that i was just on cruise control and knew that i without any troubles i would just need to take the car to the finish line. It worked out great and i got my second title!! Circus RC: At the european championships you had more pressure as defending champion? David: I didn´t feel more pressure than previous year i was just very focused on my goal all week long. Circus RC: You really impressed at the european championships. Many pilots were in trouble but everything seemed to go very well for you. Many Kyosho’s drivers were based on your settings have progressed through your setup. Did you realize you had the best package that you were always looking to improve? David: I have been running pretty much the same stuff for a long long time now, and i know my package is very very good at the moment. I feel very confident with everything and i think i have a very good package which helps me at every race i attend as i know the stuff so well after almost 6 years with it. The only change i did for 2014 was switching to Runnertime fuel and so far it has worked out very good and i´m very thankful for their support too. Circus RC: You train more specifically for the big races? David: Normally my schedule is very packed in the summer season so there is not much time for practice between the races. It doesn’t help that the closest track from my home is about 1.5 hours away. So for me going to races and always have the race pace is good practice. You also keep improving your nervs and head if you have some competition to race against. Prior a big race i normally try to go 1 or 2 days to run all stuff to make sure everything is ready yes. Circus RC: You have a specific training program you’re going to follow all year? David: No not really. Circus RC: How many times do you train per week? You have a sparring partner or you train alone? David: In winter time i try to run one time per week. In summer time i don’t practice much as i have so many races that keeps me busy. When i go practice though, i normally go together with my good friend christoffer svensson who also made the last 3 euro a-mains. We always have a great time together and we always push each other a little extra! Circus RC: During your training you do the laps or you’re focusing on specific parts of a track? David: Normally i only make laps and one goal that i have is to have an average lap time not over 0.5 seconds more than my fastest lap on a session. So practicing the pace is normally what i do. Circus RC: How is a typical day for David Ronnefalk? David: Now when school has started again… i wake up and make some breakfast then i go to school by car. Stay in school until the day is over, then i go back home and if i have a race i spend a lot of time wrenching my cars. If i don’t do that i like to watch football and especially when my favorite player (Zlatan Ibrahimovic) plays. In summertime i try to play a round of golf once in a while when i have time for it, playing golf is very good for your mentality and that is something that i have improved in my racing lately. Circus RC: You’re very close to Adrien Bertin. How are things between you? He help you technically, mentally? David: Yes, we have been working together since 2009 and our relationship is very very good today. He has helped me a lot and together we have become a very strong team together and some great success have come with us over the last years. Adrien is very good support for me at the track both mentally and technically. He has been a great mentor for me! Circus RC: You participate to the The Italian Job Race® or will unfold a contest called « nitro team orion star. » What do you think of this idea and what you see yourself winning and therefore become your team mate? David: Yes! i really look forward to go to the always very nice facility and track in padova. The new layout they have made looks very nice to so i´m very excited. About the race, i think it is a cool concept and it is a great chance to maybe get a professional career started. We have seen some very young drivers coming now lately and for all those this is a very good opportunity. It is also nice to get some top drivers to the race so i think it will be a great event! Circus RC: Are there optional parts that are essential for you for a MP9? David: The optional parts i normally use are aluminum caster blocks, ventilated brake discs, hard anodized chassis plates. Circus RC: Few events are expected for the kyosho MP9 for Worlds. Yuichi Kanai nonetheless unveiled a new wing support. You’ve used? David: Yes, i tried it last weekend. I got more rotation through corners and a more forgiving car too drive. Circus RC: The world championships will be held in Messina. What are your predictions? David: I´m very excited to go there now. The last pictures we have seen is very promising and i think it will be a great race in the end, even if there has been a lot of discussions about it. Track looks great, facility looks great and weather looks nice. I will try the best to get to my goals, of course i want to win and this would be amazing. Though i know there will be tough as there will be many fast guys i think, but i feel very good going in to the worlds no doubt. Circus RC: You seem to share a very close relationship with your father Pierre. He are very important for you in your career? David: Yes my dad is everything. He makes sure everything is in great shape and without him i would never be where i am today! Circus RC: Many drivers say a great driver is nothing without a good mechanic. This is also your opinion? David: Yes, i think it is very important to have a mechanic that you can trust and have a great relationship with. For me my dad is the best mechanic i could have! Circus RC: Is there something you always do before racing, bringing you luck? David: Not really, nothing more than making sure everything is ready. Normally i just take a deep breath before the count down starts. Circus RC: as you pilot a past or present who have served you as a model? David: I have had a few. In the early stages it was a local guy form sweden, Magnus Amilon. He had a great career and he helped me a lot when i first got started. As i got to attend more races abroad, i found that maifields driving style was very inspiring as well as watching a very consistent but fast style, more like Tebo or Tessmann. I cant really say one name but i looked up to a few. Circus RC: How is the development of factory parts from Kyosho? You receive test pieces or you and your father make changes you’re going to present to Kyosho to see what they think? David: I recieve test parts (prototypes) to test from Kyosho then i give them my thoughts of them. Circus RC: You use Orion engines. Which do you prefer and why? David: Yes, i really like the RS Limited Edition engine which gave me great success last year to help me win my first euro title. I can always rely on the engine and it has a great bottom power which really suits my style of driving. Circus RC: To be fully effective on the track, a lot of things come into play such as diet and fitness. You cared for your diet and you practice sports? David: Yes, i think it is very important to stay fit to be able to keep concentration etc for a whole race. Therefore i try to play as much golf as i can in summertime, while in winter time i play squash and floor ball twice in a week. This is really good for your health and it helps me to have a fresh mind going in to big races. Circus RC: Is there a memorable race that you remember that you love more than others? David: I have to say the world championship. I just have a great feeling for bigger races and i get even more focused to do my best and i just like when all the best drivers gathers and race together. Else than that the races i really like is, The Dirt Nitro Challenge, Neorace, Euros, Worlds. I think those four are the races i enjoy the most. Circus RC: What are your aim for next year? David: Next year i will again try to win the Euros in Italy to share the ”3 in a row” with my great team mate from Orion, Reno Savoya. Else than that i have the worlds in 1/10 electric buggy in Japan, i will put a lot of effort in for this to be in contention there. Circus RC: What are your strengths and your weaknesses? David: My strength would be that i rarely show any nervs and i just concentrate on what i have to do. There are always stuff you can improve but at the moment i can’t really think of any weakness as i feel very strong! Circus RC: What motivates you or repels most in RC? David: The hunger of always wanting to improve to get better and wanting to win. Circus RC: Which driver made you the biggest impression? David: Of the new kids coming i would say Riccardo Berton looks really fast. The one that still impress me is Ryan Maifield. Circus RC: What is your favorite track? David: There is quite a few i like out there, but some of them are Pattaya Worlds 2010, the Dirt Nitro Challenge, Neorace, 1/10 Worlds in Chico last year. Circus RC: What are the parts of the track you like the most (chicanes, jumps, etc …)? David: I don´t have any specific part i like, but i like when the track has a great flow and combinations of chicanes, jumps etc. Then it is really fun to drive. Circus RC: What are the parts of the track you like the least? David: I don´t have any parts that i don´t like really. Some parts might be tricky but there is no parts i dislike really. Circus RC: What do you prefer between nitro and electric? David: I like the longer races in nitro as well as it feels more like real motorsport as you can hear the engines. Electric has its charm too though, i like to practice electric because i think it is more difficult to drive and makes you a better driver as you have to stay clean for 5 minutes. Circus RC: For newcomers who would engage in the rc, in competition in particular, you should provide an important super advice? David: Set up goals for what you want to achieve for every new year. Circus RC: You have a battle cry, a motto? David: Always do your best in every situation. Circus RC: To finish the RC part i’ll give you some names and you must associate a word.
